What Radios Can and Can’t Do in Emergencies
CB, FRS, GMRS, and MURS radios cannot receive encrypted or licensed police, fire, or military channels.
- CB Radio: Channel 9 is a recognized public emergency frequency.
- GMRS Walkie-Talkie: Some channels like 462.675 MHz are commonly used for emergencies, but a license is required to transmit.
Marine VHF radios transmit and receive distress calls at sea on Channel 16 (156.800 MHz). Transmission requires a marine license (for non-recreational use).
NOAA Weather Radios & Scanners can receive 24/7 weather alerts, emergency warnings, and public safety messages on the 162 MHz band. Many CB, FRS, GMRS, and marine radios include NOAA Weather Radio features. Check your model specs.
